What is an ACL Injury?

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is one of four main ligaments in your knee that connects your thigh bone to your shin bone. ACL injuries often occur during sports that involve sudden stopping, jumping, or changes in direction. It is around six to ten times more likely to occur in females than in men and often occurs in soccer, rugby, gymnastics, basketball and netball.

Common Symptoms of ACL Injuries

  • A loud “pop” or popping sensation in the knee
  • Severe pain and inability to continue activity
  • Rapid swelling
  • Loss of range of motion
  • Feeling of instability or “giving way” when bearing weight

Accredited Exercise Physiologists also work closely with you to help you recover from injuries and get back to work, sport and doing the things you love!

Personalized ACL Management Pathways

At Medicine In Motion we are up to date with the most recent advances in ACL rehabilitation and involved in current research at University of Wollongong to improve ACL injury outcomes for the future. Our physiotherapists work closely with you to determine the most appropriate pathway for your specific situation:

  1. Non-Surgical Rehabilitation
For select patients, a structured rehabilitation program without surgery can achieve great results for return to function and sport. This pathway focuses on comprehensive strengthening, neuromuscular control, plyometrics and landing mechanics.
  2. Surgical Reconstruction + Rehabilitation
While no longer the only option, ACL reconstruction remains the primary option for many patients. This involves surgically repairing the ACL with a graft from your own body.
  3. ACL Healing Protocol + Rehabilitation
Emerging evidence supports the body’s ability to heal certain ACL injuries. Options like the Cross-bracing protocol may help facilitate natural healing combined with specialiSed rehabilitation.

Our physiotherapists guide you through understanding each option’s benefits, risks, and suitability for your specific injury, activity goals, and lifestyle factors.

Return to Sport

Return to sport is a crucial part of completing ACL rehabilitation. We use an evidence-based approach to return to sport testing to ensure that our patients are both physically and psychologically ready. This includes:

  • Objective strength testing with dynamometry
  • Jumping, hopping and landing assessments
  • Functional movement assessments
  • Sport-specific agility assessments
  • Psychological readiness evaluation

Medicine in Motion has partnered with VALD Performance to provide accurate assessment data during rehabilitation and for our return to sport criteria. VALD is used and trusted in high-performance organisations and competitions around the world to measure, manage and allow athletes to perform at the highest level.

Don’t let an ACL injury keep you sidelined. Contact us today to schedule your assessment and begin your journey back to peak performance.
